There is a wealth of information out there for current trichsters through online videos generously shared by Trich victors. This openness assists HelpMe2Stop with another part of its mission: To bring this 'underground' disorder into greater public consciousness. “Greater awareness will decrease the anonymity that helps fuel the compulsion,” explains Blacer.
In the event grant requests are not approved for assistance {or even if the applicant isn't applying for assistance through the organization}, HelpMe2Stop can still aid with other possible alternatives and social media has been a great ally in this effort. HelpMe2Stop encourages friends to make connections and share their stories/ideas via YouTube and Facebook. Through Causes.com/HM2S, trichsters have submitted their own YouTube video sharing their experience. Their submission qualifies them to be chosen "TrichPilot" for 90 days while helping to raise funds to get a hair makeover. All approved videographers and autobiographers get a Free Tee-Shirt. My name is Kayla Pannesi and im 16 years old. I live in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Some of my hobbies are blogging, I write poems, I play the piano, and I love acting. I want to raise money for HelpMe2Stop Trichotillomania because I think any kid who has it, is under a lot of pressure. When it comes to hair pulling or skin picking, other kids can be really harsh. Raising money would help the hair pullers get hair pieces, to be more confident about what they're doing everyday.
I believe I'm a great role-model for Trichotillomania Sufferers because I know exactly how it feels to feel left out because of hair pulling. I stopped cheerleading, and dropped out of highschool because of the pressure. Raising money would help me alot with education and my confidence. I believe raising money would also help ALOT of young girls and boys too as I am raising awareness for this cause. We could all start doing what we love again, and won't have to feel ashamed or hide our trich.
My goal is to raise $5000 to go to a salon in MA for year's worth of hair treatments. You can help me by donating or help me sell 500 Tee-Shirts or 5000 Stickers or 1000 Bandanas! See my fund-raising progress here. Friend me on Facebook and let's make this happen!
UPDATE ON KAYLA: On December 2010, Kayla reported she has stopped pulling and is doing well! Congratulations Kayla!
